Size up, and know why
Sizing is the most common complaint about heated gloves across every brand we have looked at. It is also the one that costs people money twice: once on the exchange, and once when they give up and keep a pair that does not fit.
The rule is simple and it is the opposite of what you might assume. A heated glove should have more room than an ordinary glove of the same warmth, not less. If you are between sizes, go up.
The reason: a tight glove compresses your hand and restricts blood flow. Restricted blood flow is what makes hands cold in the first place. You can end up colder in a snug heated glove than in a loose unheated one.
Why tight gloves make cold hands worse
Your hands stay warm because blood carries heat into them from the rest of your body. Anything that slows that flow makes them colder, and pressure around the hand and wrist does exactly that.
An ordinary glove that is slightly tight is a minor problem: you lose a little warmth and gain a little dexterity. A heated glove that is slightly tight is a bigger problem, because you have paid for a heat source and then partly cut off the system that distributes it. The elements warm the surface of your hand while the circulation that would carry that warmth through your fingers is being squeezed.
There is a second effect people notice before they understand it. Trapped air is insulation. A glove with a little room holds a layer of warm air against your skin, and that layer does a surprising amount of the work. Squeeze it out and you lose it.
The test, in four steps
Do this the day the gloves arrive, indoors, while the return window is open. It takes a minute.
- Make a loose fist. You should be able to close your hand fully without the glove pulling tight across the knuckles. If the back of the glove feels stretched, the size is wrong.
- Check the fingertips. There should be a few millimetres of space at the end of each finger, roughly the thickness of a coin. Fingertips pressed flat against the end is the most common sizing failure and the one that makes hands coldest.
- Feel the wrist. Snug enough to keep wind out, loose enough that you cannot feel a band of pressure. Anything that leaves a mark is too tight, and the wrist is where the blood supply enters.
- Wear them for ten minutes. Warmth should spread evenly. If your fingertips stay cool while the back of your hand warms up, and the glove feels close-fitting, that is compression rather than a faulty glove.
Measuring, and why the chart may still be wrong
Measure around your palm at the widest point, just below the knuckles, with your hand relaxed and not spread. That figure in inches is what most charts use. Measure both hands and use the larger one.
Then treat the result as a starting point rather than an answer. Owner reports for the same glove routinely go in both directions: some people find it roomy, others order by the chart and find it too small even after exchanging up a size. That inconsistency is itself the finding, and it is why the return policy matters more than the measurement.
Buy where returns are free, even if it costs a few dollars more than the cheapest listing. Across the brands we have looked at, the odds of needing an exchange are high enough that the return policy is worth more than the discount.
When looser is not better
Liners. A heated liner is designed to go inside another glove, so it should be closer-fitting than a standalone glove. It still should not compress: the test is whether you can close your hand comfortably, not whether it feels tight. And the outer glove needs room for both, which is the thing that catches people out.
Riding gloves. A glove that slides on the controls is a safety problem, so armoured gloves are cut closer than everyday ones by design. Size for control feel, then accept that you may need a thinner liner rather than a thicker glove if your hands are still cold.
Compression gloves, worth mentioning because they come up alongside this topic, are a different product entirely. They apply deliberate, even, gentle pressure and are designed to do so. That is not the same as a heated glove that happens to be too small.
Common questions
Should heated gloves be tight or loose?
Neither. They should hold warmth without compressing your hand. If you are between sizes, go up: a tight glove restricts the blood flow that carries heat into your fingers, which works against the thing you bought the gloves for.
How much room should be at the fingertips?
A few millimetres, roughly the thickness of a coin. Fingertips pressed flat against the end of the glove is the most common sizing mistake and the one most likely to leave your fingers cold despite the heat.
Do heated gloves stretch with wear?
Leather ones give a little over a season. Synthetic shells barely move. Do not buy a size down expecting them to open up, because on most heated gloves they will not.
Can I wear a thin liner underneath?
Only if the glove has room for it, which is exactly the thing to check before you buy. Adding a liner to a glove that already fits closely creates the compression problem you are trying to avoid. Our guide to gloves versus liners has the thirty second test.
My hands are different sizes. Which do I use?
The larger one. A glove that is slightly roomy on one hand costs you very little. A glove that is tight on one hand costs you the warmth in that hand.
The gloves fit but my fingers are still cold. What now?
Check the fit first, since compression is the most likely cause. If the fit is genuinely fine, the issue is usually element coverage: many gloves heat the back of the hand and stop at the knuckles, which leaves the fingertips to fend for themselves.
What to do
Measure your palm, use the chart as a starting point, and go up if you are between sizes. Buy somewhere with free returns. Run the four-step test the day they arrive rather than saving them for the first cold snap, because by then the return window may have closed.
And if the gloves feel snug but wearable, send them back anyway. Snug is the size that disappoints people slowly across a whole winter, which is worse than the size that is obviously wrong.
