What Heated Glove Runtime Claims Really Mean

Quoted figures assume the lowest setting in a warm room, which is the one situation nobody wears them in. Here is the useful version.

Halve the number on the box

Every heated glove quotes a runtime, and almost every one of them is measured in the single situation nobody wears them in: the lowest setting, indoors, at room temperature, with fresh batteries.

That is not quite lying. It is a real number produced under conditions chosen to make it as large as possible. The useful version, once you account for cold weather and the settings people actually use, is closer to half.

The working rule: take the headline figure, assume it applies only to the lowest setting, then take about a third of it for the highest. Plan around that and you will not be caught out.

Two things worth noticing. ORORO’s figures are close enough to reality to plan around, which is unusual and is part of why we rate the brand. Savior’s are roughly double, and the brand publishes different numbers across its own listings, which tells you the figure is marketing rather than measurement.

Four reasons the number shrinks

The setting you use is not the setting they tested

Headline runtimes are quoted for the lowest setting, because that is the longest. In genuine cold most people run medium or high, and each step up roughly doubles the draw. That single difference accounts for most of the gap.

Cold weather reduces battery capacity

Lithium cells deliver less energy when they are cold, and heated glove batteries sit at your wrist, outdoors, in exactly the conditions that reduce their output. A figure measured in a warm room does not survive a February morning intact.

The heat is not constant

Most gloves cycle: they draw hard to reach temperature, then less to hold it. In a warm room they spend most of their time holding. In wind at low temperature they spend far more of it climbing back up, which is the same reason a car uses more fuel in stop-start traffic.

Batteries age

A lithium pack that gave you five hours in its first season will give you less in its third. That is normal and not a fault, but it means a claim measured on a new battery describes the best day the gloves will ever have.

Comparing gloves

The number that actually helps

If you want to compare two gloves rather than trust either one’s claim, multiply the battery voltage by its capacity in amp-hours. That gives you watt-hours, which is the honest measure of how much energy the pack holds.

A 7.4V, 2000 mAh battery is 2 amp-hours, so 7.4 × 2 = 14.8 watt-hours. A 7.4V, 3000 mAh pack is 22.2 watt-hours, and will run meaningfully longer in the same glove at the same setting.

What this does and does not tell you. Watt-hours tell you which glove lasts longer. They cannot tell you how many hours, because that also depends on how much power the heating elements draw, and almost no manufacturer publishes that figure. Anyone offering you a formula that converts watt-hours directly into hours is guessing.

Voltage on its own tells you very little, which is why a 12V glove is not automatically longer-lasting than a 7.4V one. Our guide to 7.4V against 12V covers what voltage actually changes.

Making them last

Getting more out of what you have

Start warm. Switch the gloves on before your hands are cold, so the elements hold a temperature rather than climbing to one. This is the single biggest difference you can make, and it costs nothing.

Use low, not high. Well-insulated gloves are warm before you switch anything on. High is for warming up quickly, not for staying warm, and treating it as the default is what turns an eight-hour glove into a three-hour one.

Keep spare batteries warm. A spare pack in an outside pocket is already cold before you fit it. An inside pocket keeps it closer to the capacity it was rated for.

Charge before, not after. Lithium packs lose charge slowly in storage and faster in cold. A pair charged in October and left in a garage will not be full in December.

Common questions

Are manufacturers lying about runtime?

Mostly not, in the strict sense. They quote a real measurement taken under the conditions that produce the biggest number: lowest setting, room temperature, new batteries. The figure is accurate and close to useless, which is a different problem from dishonesty. Some brands are worse, and publishing different figures for the same product across their own listings is the clearest sign.

How long will heated gloves actually last on a charge?

For typical 7.4V gloves, four to eight hours on the lowest setting and one to four on the highest, with cold weather reducing both. If a specific figure matters to you, look for independent testing rather than the manufacturer’s number.

Does a bigger battery always mean longer runtime?

In the same glove at the same setting, yes. Across different gloves, not necessarily, because a glove with more heating elements or higher output draws more power. Watt-hours are still the best comparison you can make from published specifications.

Why do my gloves die faster than they used to?

Lithium batteries lose capacity over years and charge cycles. That is normal ageing rather than a fault. If the drop is sudden rather than gradual, that is worth a warranty conversation.

Do wired gloves have this problem?

What to take from this

Treat the headline runtime as the ceiling for the lowest setting on a warm day with new batteries, and plan around roughly half of it. If you need more than that, buy a second set of batteries rather than a glove with a bigger promise on the box.

And when you are comparing two gloves, work out the watt-hours. It will not tell you how many hours you get, but it will tell you which of the two lasts longer, and that is more than the marketing will.
