Heated liners are thin gloves that go inside the gloves you already own. They let you keep the shell you have chosen for weather and protection, they put the heating element closer to your skin, and they are the right answer more often than the glove brands would like you to think.
They also come with two things nobody puts in the product description. They fail badly in one specific situation, and they are not the cheap option almost everyone assumes they are. Both are worth checking before you spend anything.
Liners if your gloves have room, standalone if they do not
Fit decides this, not price. Check whether your current gloves have spare room before you look at a single product.

Liners are not the cheap option
The assumption is reasonable. A liner is less material, has no insulation, no waterproof membrane and no armor, so it ought to cost less than a full heated glove. Almost every article on this subject says so.
Check the listings and that is not what you find. At ORORO the heated liner sits at or above the price of the brand’s full heated glove. At Savior the same thing happens. This is not a rounding difference or a temporary promotion, and it holds across the brands we have looked at closely enough to compare.
Why the pricing works that way is not obvious. The element and battery are most of the cost in any heated glove, and a liner still needs both. Take away the shell and you remove the cheap part.
What matters is what it does to the decision. If liners were half the price, they would be the obvious starting point and the fit problem below would be a risk worth taking. At price parity, there is no penalty for buying the standalone glove, so the case for a liner has to rest on something else entirely. What a heated liner actually is
A liner is a thin stretch glove with heating elements sewn into it and a small battery at the wrist. It has no insulation worth mentioning and no weather protection at all. On its own it is close to useless. Inside another glove, it turns that glove into a heated one.
The split matters because a heated glove is doing two separate jobs. The shell keeps wind and water out and holds warm air in. The heating element adds warmth the shell cannot generate on its own. A liner takes over the second job and leaves the first to the glove you already own.
The fit problem, which decides everything
Adding a liner to a glove that fits well makes that glove tight. A tight glove compresses your hand and restricts blood flow. Restricted blood flow is what makes hands cold in the first place.
So you can end up with a heated liner inside a compressed glove that leaves your fingers colder than they were before you spent the money. The heat is real, but it is fighting circulation you just cut off.
Test it before you buy. Put on a thin dress glove or a running glove liner, then your winter gloves over the top. If they still feel comfortable and you can make a fist without the fabric pulling, a heated liner will fit. If anything feels snug, buy standalone heated gloves instead.
Motorcycle gloves are the most common problem. They are usually sized close for lever feel and often carry armor across the knuckles, which leaves nothing to give. Ski gloves and work gloves are far more likely to have room.

- Bulk. A liner inside a thin glove is usually less bulky than a purpose-built heated glove, which matters for anything needing dexterity.
Where standalone gloves win
- Your gloves have no spare room. This is the decisive one. No amount of other advantages survives a fit problem.
- Outright warmth. A purpose-built heated glove is designed around its element, with insulation positioned to hold that heat in. A liner inside a random shell is a compromise.
- Wiring and cuffs. Standalone gloves route the cable inside the glove and seal at the cuff. With a liner you have a wire emerging at your wrist, which is one more thing to snag or let cold air past.
- No price penalty. Because the two categories cost about the same, choosing the glove costs you nothing. That was not true when liners were assumed to be the budget option.
- Simplicity. One item, one charger, one set of controls, and nothing to put on in the right order with cold hands.

What to look for
Element coverage down the fingers. Many liners heat only the back of the hand, which warms the part that was not especially cold. Your fingertips are the problem, and the element needs to reach them.
Genuinely thin fabric. The whole point is fitting inside something else. A padded liner defeats itself.
Battery placement. Some liners put the pack at the wrist where a glove cuff has to close over it. Check that your cuff will fasten.
Cable length and exit point. Too short and it pulls when you move your hand. Too long and it bunches inside the glove.

Heated grips, if you ride
If you ride a motorcycle, heated grips solve a related problem for less money than either option here. They warm your palms rather than your fingers, and they do nothing for the back of your hand where the wind actually hits. Plenty of riders run grips and a normal glove in mild cold, then switch to heated gloves when it gets serious.

A liner is worth it when you have gloves you actually want to keep wearing, or when you need heat across several different pairs. A standalone heated glove is worth it when you would rather have one item that was designed as a system, or when the cold is severe enough that a compromise shell will not hold the heat.
