Heated glove marketing is unusually unreliable. Runtime gets quoted from a bench at room temperature on the lowest setting, which is the one situation in which nobody actually wears them. Coverage gets described as “full hand” when the elements stop at the knuckles. This page sets out how we work and what our figures mean.
Our standard
Every number on this site is labelled with where it came from.
- Claimed means the manufacturer says it. We print it as their figure, not ours.
- Reported means it comes from owners, across enough accounts to be a pattern rather than an anecdote.
- Measured means we did it ourselves, and we say when and under what conditions.
How we assess a glove
Most of what we publish comes from reading owner accounts at scale. For any glove we cover, that means working through retailer reviews, owner forums, motorcycling and skiing communities, and manufacturer documentation, then reporting what turns up repeatedly.
The reason is simple. A single afternoon with a pair of gloves tells you how they feel. Several hundred owners across a full winter tell you which batteries stop holding charge in year two, which elements fail first, which sizing runs small, and which gloves people quietly stop wearing. That is the information buyers actually need, and no amount of bench testing produces it.
- Start with the specification. Voltage, battery capacity in milliamp-hours, element placement, weight, warranty terms. Capacity and coverage matter more than the headline claims.
- Read the owner reports. Across multiple retailers and communities rather than one listing, because a single product page skews positive and a single forum thread skews negative.
- Look for repetition, not outliers. One person with a dead glove is bad luck. Forty people describing the same failure in month four is a design problem.
- Compare claims against experience. Where owners consistently report far less runtime than the box promises, we say so and give both numbers.
- Weight the long-term reports. Reviews written after one cold week are worth less than reviews written after two winters. We look hardest at the second kind.
What we look at
- Runtime in practice. What owners report on each setting, against what the manufacturer claims.
- Element coverage. Whether the heat reaches the fingertips or stops at the knuckles.
- Durability. What fails, and when. Usually the battery or the wiring at the cuff.
- Sizing. Whether the product runs true to the chart, which matters more here than in most clothing.
- Cuff and fit. How the glove seals against a sleeve, and whether the battery pack gets in the way.
- Support. Whether replacement batteries are still sold, and whether warranty claims get honoured.
What we commit to

Where the explanations come from
Some of what you will read here is explanatory rather than comparative: how voltage affects heat output, why battery capacity predicts runtime better than voltage does, what happens to lithium cells in the cold. That material rests on published specifications and basic electrical principles you can check yourself, and we try to show the working rather than asking you to take our word for it.
Samples and independence
Where a manufacturer supplies a product, it is stated at the top of the article it appears in. Samples are not returned, are not treated as payment, and buy no influence over a rating or a ranking. No manufacturer sees an article before it is published, and none has ever been given the chance to change one.
